Day 5 - The beginning of the journey into mosaic making

Today we finally began making mosaics! We will create the fragment of Julijs Straume carpet named JUNGLE. In 1925 this carpet received gold medal at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.  It belongs to the group of animal carpets that emerged in Anatolia in the 14th century. While working on the design of this canonical example, Straume studied animal carpets in depth, mastering the style, composition, colour range and symmetry of court carpets as well as traditional animal and floral motifs.

We were divided in 3 working groups which are rotating - firstly works one group for 2 h, then second and then third. Its impossible for so many persons to work together in one time.
Our mosaic teacher Agnese introduced us to the art of making mosaics. Since we all are pretty new to that, we needed to learn the basics, for example, how to cut tiles and how to properly make a pattern. Most of the day was spent working with tiles. Everyone enjoyed the process,  even though some people got cuts on their hands from the shards of tiles.
Meanwhile, we were introduced to OPEN SPACE methodology - each participant (which group dont work for mosaics in particular hour) need to think about what kind of workshop he/she want to make for others in order to fulfill the free time.
In the evening we were given the chance to visit a Rustavi local hangout spot named "TaoBa". We enjoyed each others company, despite of bad weather conditions.
Inspiration fact: Part of the tiles were brought from Latvia, because Latvians wanted to leave a piece of Latvia in Georgia. :)
